Question

Assalaamu alaykum. I would like to know whether it is halal to have a hair product business, like selling hair dyes and scissors for hair cutting. Thank you, and regards.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The basic principle is that all sales are lawful and permissible. The possibility that a lawful commodity – such as hair products – may be used for unlawful purposes does not prohibit selling them; general lawful commodities may be used for both lawful and unlawful purposes. However, if the seller knows that the buyer will use a certain product for a prohibited purpose, such as hair dye that a woman would use to dye her hair and expose it to non-Mahrams (marriageable men), then it is not permissible for him to sell it to her because it would be considered helping her to disobey her Lord. If the seller does not know that the buyer will use the product for an unlawful purpose, then the basic principle is that the sale is halaal (lawful).

Allah knows best.
