The Spread of Riba Is a Sign of the Hour
Fatwa No: 405640

Assalam aalekum sheikh I see that many people buy house on loan and they ask others to do .sheikh it is sign of end times .they buy house on loan and feel that they have achieved very great to prevent our self with the love of this world and prevent our thing from such things

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If what is meant is that these people borrow money with Riba (interest and/or usury) in order to buy houses, then this is a great evil and a clear sin. The fact that they invite others to take up such Riba-based loans is a further sin and going to excess in falsehood.

Borrowing money with Riba is one of the grave major sins and one of the destructive sins, and it necessitates the curse and eradicates blessings.

Buying houses is not a necessity that makes borrowing money with Riba lawful.

For more benefit on buying a house with Riba, please refer to Fataawa 120569, 384670, 83806 and 83738.

The spread of Riba is one of the signs of the Hour (Day of Judgment).

In Al-Mu’jam al-Awsat by At-Tabrani, it was narrated that Ibn Mas’ood may Allaah be pleased with him said that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Before the Hour Riba and wine will spread."

However, if what is meant is a good loan that is devoid of Riba (zero interest), then, in principle, this is permissible whether it is to buy houses or other things, although it is more appropriate for a person to be keen on avoiding debts without a dire need.

If the love of this worldly life dominates the heart and being keen on achieving worldly benefits is the most important objective of the person, then this would be a reason for heedlessness and weakness of faith and committing sins.

The remedy for this is to frequently remember and mention death and what takes place after it, and to remember the Hereafter.

Allah Knows best.
