Fatwa CenterRuling on women wearing men's clothes inside the house
Question
Is it permissible for a Muslim woman to wear men's clothes like pajamas or a tracksuit inside her house or in a (closed) place where only Mahram (permanently unmarriageable) men can see her? Please provide us with a Fatwa concerning this matter. May Allaah reward you!
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
If these clothes are peculiar to men apart from women, then it is impermissible for a Muslim woman to wear such clothes indoors or outdoors as it would be considered imitating men, which is forbidden in Islam.
The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, cursed the men who imitate women and the women who imitate men. [Al-Bukhari and others]
However, if these clothes are commonly worn by both men and women, then there is no sin on the part of the Muslim woman in wearing them.
