Qunut in Fajr Prayer

Question

Is it correct to say Qunut every day in the Fajr prayers? Kindly send the answer with authentic Ahadith?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Muslim scholars differed in opinion concerning the matter of supplicating Qunut in Fajr Prayer. Imams Ahmad and Abu Haneefah are of the opinion that supplicating Qunut in Fajr Prayer or any other Prayer is not legitimate with the exception of at the Witr Prayer. Imam Muslim reported in his Saheeh that, “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) supplicated Qunut for one month in the Fajr Prayer, invoking evil upon some of the Arab tribes and later he left it.

In another Hadeeth, Abu Maalik said: “I asked my father who prayed behind the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, and about five years behind ‘Ali, may Allaah be pleased with all of them, here in Koofa, and I said to him: “Did they supplicate the Qunut in Fajr Prayer?' He said: 'No, Son', it is something that has been innovated.” [At-Tirmithi who said: 'it is Hasan Saheeh Hadeeth, and this is common practice among scholars’]

Imam Ash-Shafi and Imam Maalik are of the opinion that supplicating Qunut in Fajr Prayer is Sunnah at all times. They based their opinion on the Hadeeth narrated by Anas may Allaah be pleased with him that he said: “The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) did not stop supplicating Qunut during the Fajr Prayer until he left this world.” [Ahmad]

‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him used to supplicate Qunut in Fajr Prayer in the presence of the Companions and others.

Finally, we conclude that this kind of difference is acceptable, so one should not object to others.
