Question
What does Shariah say about marrying a woman who has a son? Note: Woman was never married before.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
If a woman who has committed fornication repents and does righteous deeds and follows the right path, then it is permissible for a virgin man to marry her after making sure that she is not pregnant. The fact that this woman has a son from fornication is not a religious obstacle to marry her. It should be noted that a man who marries this woman is not obliged to spend on her son or to provide him with shelter, but if one does so then that is better and Allaah will reward him for it.
