What is the linguistic definition of the Quran? Why is it named by this name?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Linguistically, the Quran is a verbal noun from the verb Qara'a (to read), and to read has a meaning of gathering and collecting, so the Quran has this name because it gathered and assembled the chapters, and it comprehended stories, orders, prohibitions and so forth. Nonetheless, some scholars are of the view that the Quran is a proper noun and it is not derived from any other word, just like the Torah and the Injeel (Gospel).
