Unveiling the hair to the person who proposes to marry her

Question

Is it permissible for a woman to unveil her hair to a marriageable person who proposes to marry her?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is permissible for a man to look at a woman whom he wants to marry, it is also said that it is desirable for him to do so. Since it is permissible for him to look at her, it is permissible for him to look at what incites him to marry her. However, the jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them differed in relation to the parts of hair body that he is permitted to look at. Most of them are of the view that he is only permitted to look at her hands and face. Nonetheless, the Hanbali school permitted him to look at six parts of her body: the head, the neck, the face, the arms, the feet and the legs. Therefore, it is permitted to look at her hair, and this is the most appropriate as the hair is the most thing that a person who proposes for marriage would like to see, and this is what incites him for accepting her as a wife. So, there is no harm for a woman to unveil her hair to the person who proposes to marry her if she thinks that he will marry her.

Allaah Knows best.
