Question
What is the distance that one should leave when speaking to a marriageable woman face to face?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
It is forbidden to look at a marriageable woman and this is only permitted for a necessity like when treating her and when she gives testimony and the like. Even when it is permissible to look at her, it is a condition that there should be no temptation. If one fears to be tempted, then it is not permissible for him to look at her. So the permissibility and non-permissibility of looking at a woman depends on being safe from temptation, and not on a particular distance between the person who is looking and the person who is looked at.
