The sin is greater if committed at a time or place of excellence

Question

What is the ruling of shaving the beard in a mosque? Does one have to expiate for this?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Shaving the beard is forbidden according to the most preponderant opinion of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them and this is the correct opinion proved by evidence from texts and from the practical action of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his companions may Allaah be pleased with them. The prohibition of shaving the beard is more confirmed if one does so in a mosque as the sin is greater if it is committed at a place of excellence like a mosque, or at a time of excellence like the month of Ramadan, and the like. Nonetheless, there is no expiation for shaving the beard in a mosque, but one has to repent to Allaah.

Allaah Knows best.
