Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

In principle women are allowed to wear gold as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Wearing silk and gold has been made lawful for the females of my nation and unlawful for their males." [Ahmad and An-Nasaa’ee] However, Islam does not oblige the woman to wear gold as a sign indicating she is married, but if her husband orders her to do so in order to beautify herself for him then she is obliged to obey him; this is what Islam advocates. As regards this necklace, if her husband does not order her to wear it, then it is up to her, she can wear it if she wants; but if she does not like it, she is permitted not to wear it. Wearing it is permissible and not wearing it is also permissible.

It should be noted, however, that one should be careful not to imitate the non-Muslims. If there are some non-Muslims who believe that it is forbidden for a woman to take her gold off until she dies, then it is forbidden for any Muslim to coincide with them in relation to this belief. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Whoever imitates a people, he is one of them." [Abu Daawood] What is forbidden is that which Allaah and His Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) forbade and not what the non-Muslims forbade.

Allaah Knows best.
