Fatwa CenterBuying a copy of the Quran similar to that existing in the Prophet's mosque
Question
Assalmu-Alaikum. This is regarding an incident that happened to me. During my haj(I thank Allah for giving me the opputunity and means) , during my visit to medina , in the Prophets (Peace be upon him) mosque i found the English translated copy of the Holy Quran. I Found it , very pleasingly presented , as in , it was in simple english , and there were a lot of useful explanations.etc. And the enslish translated Quran had the, "Belongs to Masjid-un-Nabawi" , type of look and interior stamp printing etc as all the other qurans in the masjid do. Nevertheless As i liked this quran very much , i went looking for it in shops that sold copies of the quran etc.And i found the very same quran as in the mosque , in the first shop i walked in to. So i purchased this quran. Now , after returning to my native country , i am worried whether this quran is legal to be sold? In other words , are the qurans that are in the 2 Holy Mosques , as they are donated by the king , not for sale. Or are the same quran copies legally sold outside the mosque? If you do know the answer to this question then please explain , because i am worried whether i am owning a quran "STOLEN!?" from the mosque? I may be just worried about something that is of no significance , but i just wanna be sure. Please Help. Thank you.

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Indeed you did well by not taking a copy of the Quran from the mosque as it is an endowment on the mosque and it is not permissible to take it or possess it.
As regards the copy which you bought, if there is nothing which suggests that it is an endowment and that it cannot be sold, then there is no harm for you to buy or sell it. The copy which you bought being like those which exist in the mosque does not necessarily mean that it is stolen from the mosque, and in principle a Muslim is innocent of guilt. The books which are displayed in the markets and in bookshops are in principle for sale unless there is evidence which suggests otherwise.
