His father asks him to go with him late to the Friday prayer

Question

If my father asks me to come with him at the time of Jummah khotba, when the imam starts talking, shall I listen to my father and not be signed by the angels for having attended the jumah but then reach at the last minutes of duaa and pray the 2 rakaat, or shall I disagree with my father and go to the prayer at the time slightly before the khotba so that the angels mark me present? Please be clear, I expect a clear cut-off answer and then suggestions. Thank you

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

If a father asks his son to accompany him to the Friday prayer and the father has a valid reason for this request, like needing someone to help him when walking due to him being advanced in age, or due to a sickness and the like, then the son is obliged to obey his father even if he misses the virtue of going early to the mosque. That is because going early to the Friday prayer is something desirable and the obedience of the father is obligatory as long as he does not order his son to commit a sin; hence, the obligation comes in priority over what is desirable. But if the father does not have a valid reason, then this is senseless and the father should not be obeyed in this case.

Many fathers prevent their sons from obeying their Lord and follow their own desires (i.e. the fathers) without having a sound reason.

In any case, a son should be kind and dutiful to his father. If the father orders his son to abandon what is desirable while abandoning it is of no benefit for the father, then the son should clarify to him in good and soft words that it is better for a Muslim to do what is desirable and that it is more appropriate for the father to help his son in the obedience of Allaah.

It should be noted that the son should be careful not to severe ties with his father or to harm him (by not obeying him) if what the father is requesting is rightfully justifiable.

Finally, you may show Fatwa 88803 to your father; it is about going early to the Friday prayer.

Allaah Knows best.
