Hastening marriage is of greater benefit than studies

Question

Assalamialaikum, my daughter has received a marriage proposal and has accepted. we as the parents would prefer that a nikaah takes place immeiately so as that there is no haraam interaction. the boy's parents however would like the nikaah to take place within the next year or so as they believe he is studying and this would impact his studies. both my daughter and the the boy are studying to become doctors and will graduate at the end of the year. all we want to fulfill is the commands of Allah and the sunnah of our beloved Prophet (SAW). are we wrong in our demands.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The ruling of a person who proposes to a girl for marriage is like the ruling of a non-Mahram to her, as long as he does not conclude the marriage contract with her. Indeed, we have already clarified the limits of relationship between a fiancé and her fiancée in Fataawa 84300 and 81668, so please refer to them.

Therefore, what you want to do, which is hastening the marriage, is the correct procedure and this is in conformity with the Sharee’ah (Islamic Law). However, if the other party does not want to respond to you, then the relationship between your daughter and her fiancé should be as explained above and you should warn and draw the attention of your daughter to this.

Furthermore, it should be noted that the marriage should not be delayed because of studies. Marriage is not an obstacle for studies, and the benefit of hastening the marriage is greater than the benefit of studies, especially at the present time when temptations are widespread. Indeed, being safe about one’s religion comes in priority over being safe about this worldly life, and it should be noted that combining the two matters is possible in your situation.

Allaah Knows best.
