His father insistently asks him to divorce his wife

Question

Salam!I am writing to you to seek guidance on my marriage. My husband and I are of different nationalities but the same religion "islam" and we are both religiously praying and following the guidance of our prophet mohammed (pbuh).. Alhamdullilah. Our marriage have been on for almost 5 years now but half of that we spent it away from each other due to the reason that my husband has been having problem with his family esp. his father. His father wants him to divoce me and marry someone from their nationality in which he refused to do. His father told him that he will not forgive my husband until his death if he did not divorce me.Please enlighten me on this matter brother. Everyday my husband comes home from a visit to his family home with a lonely face but he avoids to talk about it because he don't want to upset me. Wallahi this matter does not upset me anymore. I think what is happenng is allah's will and our faith. We love each other so much and if my husband just in case divorce me i will accept it without heaviness in my heart. Please tell us what to do. Also did my husband disobey his father by not doing what he wants? I am waiting..Thank you and Salam!

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Your husband does not have to obey his father in divorcing you without an acceptable reason, because obedience is required only in what is permissible. However, he must continue to treat him kindly and endeavor to convince him to change his mind concerning this issue. If the father insisted on his stand, then your husband is not blamed if he disobeyed him in this matter, because this is not considered undutifulness to parents. In such a case, the threat of his father is harmless as long as your husband performs his duties towards him properly. For more benefit, refer to Fatwa 84056.

However, you should supplicate Allaah The Almighty earnestly and He will be sufficient for you in everything, as He said (what means): {And whoever relies upon Allaah - then He is sufficient for him.}[Quran 65:3]

Moreover, be sure that Allaah The Almighty will never forsake you as long as you are satisfied with His Decree and obedient to Him. Allaah The Almighty said (what means): {…he who fears Allaah and is patient, then indeed, Allaah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.}[Quran 12:90]

Allaah Knows best.
