Fatwa CenterWill an unmarried woman marry one of the Companions in the Hereafter?
Question
Is there a Saheeh Hadeeth by the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, stating that the girl who does not marry in this worldly life will marry a Companion in the Hereafter? If so, is abstaining from marriage for this reason unlawful?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
If Allaah The Almighty bestows His favor upon His slave by admitting him into Paradise, He will grant him all that he loves and desires. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And therein is whatever the souls desire and [what] delights the eyes, and you will abide therein eternally.}[Quran 43:71] The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, told us that in Paradise there would be what no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard and no heart has ever imagined. [Al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’i and Ibn Maajah]
Accordingly, it is possible that in the Hereafter a girl marries whomever she likes and desires. However, her marriage to a Companion is a matter that has not been mentioned in any text of Sharee‘ah, and we have previously addressed this issue in Fatwa 2369. Men will also marry in Paradise; Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.}[Quran 2:25]
It is wrong to abstain from marriage for this reason, because marriage is a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Anyone who abstains from marriage has turned away from the Sunnah of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, who disassociated himself from anyone who abandons his Sunnah and fails to abide by it. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
In conclusion, it is impermissible to abstain from marriage for the purpose of marrying in the Hereafter. There is no contradiction between marrying in the worldly life and in the Hereafter if the person is from the dwellers of Paradise.
