Question
I have a jacket which has the "okay" sign on it. This sign is used by the Illuminati for the number "666". So some people could think that the company who has made this jacket is from the Illuminati, but no one would resemble the one who is wearing this to the Illuminati or to the disbelievers. What is the ruling on wearing such jacket? If it is forbidden, am I allowed to give the jacket back in order to get the money back or not pay if it was ordered from the internet? Please answer quickly as the time during which I can give the jacket back is about to end.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Judging whether wearing what carries this sign is allowed or forbidden is connected to the issue of imitating the disbelievers. If this sign is peculiar to the Illuminati such that no one other than them wears it, then wearing it involves imitating them. The Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, "Whoever imitates a people is (considered to be) one of them." [Abu Daawood - Ibn Hibbaan classified it as Saheeh (sound)]
The Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Fiqh reads:
"Imitation of non-Muslims by wearing what bears their signs or slogans:
The majority of the scholars held that the Muslim who imitates non-Muslims by wearing their clothes that distinguish them from Muslims, such as the Zunnaar (a distinctive belt that Christians living in Muslim countries used to wear) and the like, is declared a committer of apparent Kufr (as far as the worldly rulings are concerned) if he wears it in a Muslim country and he did so by way of inclination to the non-Muslims, unless there is a necessity for wearing them, such as hot or cold weather, as a trick at times of war, or due to being forced to wear them by the enemy. If it is later found out that he did not wear them out of conviction (of disbelief), he is not declared a Kaafir (disbeliever) as far as his inward state is concerned. This is based on the hadeeth wherein Ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, reported that the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, 'Whoever imitates a people is one of them,' and also because the clothes peculiar to the disbelievers are a sign of disbelief. Using a sign as an indicator of what it refers to is established in legislation and in reason."
If this is the case, then you should remove this sign from the jacket, if possible, and there is no harm in wearing it after removing the sign. However, if you cannot remove it and you can return the jacket to the store and get your money back, then that is permissible. It is not permissible to take the jacket without paying for it if it was ordered online; Allah, the Exalted, says (what means): {O you who have believed, fulfill (all) contracts...} [Quran 5:1]
However, if this sign is not peculiar and distinctive to them, then there is no harm in wearing what bears it.
