Asalamu Alaykum. My question is in regards to studying astronomy and the constellations. There are some constellations I am unsure about such as the ones named after the zodiac and other Greek mythology. I have heard that these are not problematic as long as you don't believe in their lore and only use and view them scientifically. I just want to verify if this is correct or not. BarakAllahu Feekum.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His Slave and Messenger.
The study of astronomy includes aspects that are prohibited and others that are permissible.
Among what is prohibited is astrology, and using celestial calculations to claim knowledge of the unseen or to predict future events.
Among what is permissible is learning astronomy for beneficial and legitimate purposes, such as: determining the direction of the qiblah, knowing the times of prayer, establishing the beginnings of the Hijri months, and similar practical uses.
There is no harm in a student of astronomy using names of stars or planets that were not originally given by Muslims, but were instead coined by non-Muslims. Even if these names are linked to Greek mythology or other traditions, this remains permissible so long as the Muslim does not hold the same beliefs as the polytheists.
Allah Knows best.
