Question

Is it Halal to use cream including alcohol or to use alcohol to stop bleeding?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The scholars differed in opinion concerning the ruling on preparations that include alcohol; whether it is allowed to use them or not?

This disagreement results from the following:

1) Is alcohol included in such preparations intoxicating or not?
2) Is wine impure or not?

The predominant opinion is that alcohol included in such preparations is an intoxicant and impure like wine, and each and every intoxicating liquid is also impure. This is the opinion of the majority of Muslim scholars.

Allah Says (what means): {O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.} [Quran 5:90]

Based upon the above-statement, we say that the preparations that include alcohol are not permitted to be used even though we add to them what prevents drinking them, since the illegality of using them is due to its impurity, which is still existing.

But, if alcohol has completely changed in the course of manufacture; i.e., becomes non-intoxicant, then it becomes pure according to the predominant opinion.

Therefore, it is not permitted to use such preparations to stop bleeding unless there is no other alternative, since we believe in the illegality of using them in general.

Allah knows best.
