Fatwa CenterMen Wearing Silver Chains or Bracelets
Question
I was advised by two Imams that wearing silver chains or bracelets is not lawful, but I couldn't find any information with regards to this anywhere, could you advise me if it is? They say that it represents something peculiar to women, so we shouldn't wear it; I don't feel this is right of them to say, without stating some proof.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
It is unlawful for men to wear chains or bracelets for beautification regardless of the mineral from which they are made, whether it is platinum or else, because this is an imitation of women. So, anything which is peculiar to men Islamically or conventionally is forbidden for women and vice versa. An-Nawawi 
said in his book Al-Majmoo’: “Our companions (i.e. the scholars of the Shaafi’i School of jurisprudence) say that the silver ring is lawful for men. This is a consensus of all Muslim scholars. As for all other pieces of silver jewelry (bracelets, chains, … etc.), they are absolutely forbidden according to the view of the majority of scholars.”
In fact, wearing silver jewelry is conventionally a particularity of women and the ring is only an exception; anything apart from the ring is forbidden for men.
The Prophet cursed the men who imitate women and the women who imitate men, as reported in a sound Hadeeth.
Anyway, it is forbidden for men to wear chains or bracelets. If we add to this the material from which they are made; i.e. silver which is also forbidden for men, then the prohibition becomes greater. Men should not wear any silver made device except a ring, or a thing that is used for treatment. It is similarly unlawful to use silver key holders.
There are texts about the prohibition of using golden or silver receptacles for drinking or eating, and the scholars add to these any use that is not specified by the Sharee’ah and made permissible. This is the most preponderant opinion of Muslim scholars.
