Fatwa CenterParents forbid him from wearing Ghutrah
Question
Assalaamu alaykum, Scholars. I recently asked you about my parents forbidding me to wear a scarf over my head, and you sent me a fatwa saying that obeying the parents is not obligatory in one's clothing, but I asked you this question since I thought that perhaps the rulling may change since I am wearing a Saudi scarf in a country were that is not common (Algeria). The problem is that I do not cover my head because I do not like the caps that religious people wear here, and I love to wear a Saudi scarf instead, and I do not feel not well when I do not wear it. So tell me, given that this garment is not common here in Algeria, is the rulling still the same, and is it therefore not obligatory on me to obey them. Notice that I live in Algeria and that my parents live in Spain.

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Perhaps you are referring to fatwa 339592. What we said in that fatwa is the same that we say here about wearing the Ghutrah (Saudi head cloth) in your country. The basic principle is that you are not obliged to obey your parents in this regard unless the reason they are forbidding you from wearing it is valid, such as is the case if they fear that harm may befall you and that they would accordingly be harmed. If this is the case, then it is obligatory to obey them even if they do not live with you in the same country. You should obey them and show dutifulness towards them to the best of your abilities. We believe that the matter would be easier for you if you give up wearing it for the sake of earning their pleasure.
