Naming a New-Born Daughter Qaylah

Question

Assalam alaykum, I would like to know the meaning of the name Qaylah. The name of a sahabiya, also the name of Qaylah bint amr wife of Hashim ibn 'abd manaf great-grandfather of the Prophet. Can I name my daughter Qaylah?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible for you to name your daughter Qaylah, because it is a name that was well-known among the Arabs, as the mother’s name of the supporters of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) (Al-Aws and al-Khazraj) was Qaylah.

The book entitled as-Seerah authored by Ibn Hisham reads:

The family lineage of Qaylah: She is the daughter of Kahil ibn ‘Udhrah ibn Qudha’ah, the mother of Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj.” [End of quote – Abridged]

Allah knows best.
